What’s Required to Be a California Licensed Security Guard?

According to estimates compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the security guard profession is expected to grow by 6 percent between now and the year 2026. Demand for security personnel is projected to be strongest in major economies such as California, and this means the job prospects for guards and surveillance specialists will be pretty good over the next few years. Although this is a large occupation that attracts many candidates, not everyone is cut out to be a security guard. In the Golden State, this profession is regulated by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), which means security guards must meet certain requirements before they can become licensed.

California Security Guard License Card

The BSIS issues licenses to individuals who are at least 18 years old. The registration process includes a mandatory eight-hour class that must be completed on an annual basis. The backgrounds of applicants are investigated by the California Department of Justice as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This background check will include a biometric live scan of fingerprints. As of late 2018, the sum of application and registration fees comes to $120. Depending on their work arrangements, these fees may be covered by employers.

Additional Mandatory Training

The aforementioned eight-hour course is just the first step in mandatory training for security guards in California. Once the background investigation clears and the initial course is completed, prospective guards must complete an additional 32 hours of mandatory training. Some of the topics covered include public relations, preservation of evidence, liability issues, legal scope, and handling individuals who are a threat to safety.

BSIS Firearms Training

In all of California, including Chatsworth, armed private security guards must obtain a firearms permit from the BSIS, which means learning how to handle weapons plus qualifying at a shooting range while being evaluated by a BSIS instructor. Firearms permits are issued based on the weapons caliber, and qualification sessions involve shooting 50 rounds per caliber twice a year to keep permits active. Tactical firearms training for specialized personnel is often provided by security firms. Only U.S. citizens and legal residents can become armed security guards because of firearms permit requirements.

Willingness to Learn and Good Moral Character

The duties and responsibilities of security guards in California require candidates to be resourceful, ethical, willing to learn, and inclined to protect life and property. For many guards, the mandatory 40 hours of training plus the shooting qualification to get the firearms permit are just the beginning. This is an occupation in which continuing education and professional development are expected of those who wish to pursue more complex assignments. The security services career is filled with moral and legal situations that guards are expected to encounter and handle. To this effect, they’re also expected to train accordingly.
